It took almost one year on the back-burner (and several false starts), but
finally Cyril Collins managed to get a working model all of his own!
Roughly based on the Lanchester layout, this wood-and-brass model features
three different kinds of gear wheels:
Lantern wheels: Dowels are inserted into holes of two parallel plates.
Crown wheels: Dowels are fixed into holes of one plate only
Spur wheels: Notches are cut into the rim of a plate.
And Cyril even combined Crown and Spur wheel, as can be seen on the picture
below! Another first on this site is his 3-legged spider.
Judicious selection of a pitch circle fitting to the
predefined dowel diameter (1/16" or 1.6mm) - and lots of patience - assure
smooth running. From the ruler on the photo a wheel base of 4.5" (11 cm)
can assumed.
